Energy Analyses

Solar Array at the Wastewater Treatment Plant

The City has carried out a variety of energy analyses in order to track energy use and energy production. They can be seen below:

Green house gasses emission by sector
  • Red Lodge Community Greenhouse Gas Inventory

    • Summary: This report is a baseline comprehensive assessment of energy use and GHG emissions for all activities within Red Lodge in the calendar year 2016. The report finds that in 2016, the Red Lodge community was responsible for:
      • 261,005 million British thermal units (MMBtu’s) of energy.
      • 20,814 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (mtCO2e) of GHG emissions. Our per capita emissions were 8.9 mtCO2e.
      • Stationary energy from the residential and commercial sectors made up over 80% of both energy use and emissions in 2016.
      • The Red Lodge community’s waste diversion rate was only 4% in 2016, compared to a national average of 35%
      • Based on population and commercial growth rates, and assuming no actions are taken to reduce emissions, our emissions could be 50% higher by 205
  • City of Red Lodge Energy Conservation Plan

    • Summary: This Energy Conservation Plan focuses solely on municipal operations. The strategies included within identify ways to reduce the electricity and natural gas used by City government facilities and vehicles. It seeks to create an energy roadmap for the City of Red Lodge that identifies reduction targets and strategies and ultimately results in reductions of energy use, energy costs, and greenhouse gas emissions. It establishes two goals:
      • The ultimate goal is to reduce our emissions from City operations to 50% below 2016 levels by the year 2040.
      • We also have an interim goal of being 10% below by 2021.
    • These goals will be met through strategies in A) Fleet, Buildings, and Streetlights B) Internal Policies and Practices C) Solid Waste, Recycling, and Compost D) Wastewater and Water E) Codes and Land Use.
  • City of Red Lodge Baseline Assessment

    • Summary: This report is a baseline comprehensive assessment of energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, and costs generated by City government operations. This inventory of 2016 operations determines the following:
      • City government energy use resulted in net annual emissions of 1,910 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (mtCO2e) and cost $201,227 in total.
      • 60% of emissions and energy use are attributed to Buildings & Facilities.
      • Over half of energy costs come from the consumption of energy in Water Treatment.
  • City Building Solar Rooftop Analysis

    • Summary: The following report is an examination of potential rooftop solar available on the City of Red Lodge municipal buildings. This includes Carnegie Library, City Hall, the Police Station, the Public Works Shop, the public restrooms, and the Recycling Center.
