City Nature Challenge 2021: Red Lodge Area

City Nature Challenge 2021: Red Lodge Area includes all of Carbon County, engaging people to document the biodiversity of the area. This is a BioBlitz-style event which relies on a citizen-science, crowdsourcing effort to record as many species as possible.

Finn Park Revitalization Project

In July of 2020, hazard trees in Finn Park were either pruned or removed. Funded by the Program Development Fund from the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC), the City was able to contract out the project to a local arborist. Sawyers from Red Lodge Fire Rescue were also able to fell and buck trees. Much of the wood was made available to the Red Lodge Area Community Foundation's firewood program.

2021 Mini Park Clean-Ups

Each month, from May-August, the Parks Board will host a Mini Park Clean-Up. In April of each year we host a spectacular clean-up event with dozens of volunteers to pick up trash, winter debris, prune, stain playgrounds and more. These mini events will help to address ongoing needs in the parks and keep the City engaged with community volunteers. We are very excited in 2021 to be using brand new tools, purchased in part through a grant with the Montana Urban Community Forestry Association, to aid in caring for our urban forests.

North Community Entrance Beautification

In summer 2021, dozens of new grasses and perennials will be planted in two sections of the roundabout. This planting event, scheduled for June 12, sparks what will be a larger effort to beautify our north entrance into Red Lodge over the next couple of years. In addition to enhancing the visual appeal of the community entrance, the Parks Board is working to improve the tree canopy cover along North Broadway (Hwy 212) and decrease stormwater runoff through the use of planting diverse species of trees, shrubs and herbaceous cover.

*Projects and events are made possible by grants, donations, and volunteer efforts in our community. Through various grants we are able to continue to work toward beautifying Red Lodge and caring for the parks and urban forest.
