  • Yes, you must obtain your license from the Clerk of the District Court. The cost is $53.

Who can perform marriage ceremonies in the state of Montana?

  • Any judge, including judges of state and federal courts, Justice of the Peace, minister, or other person of any religious society or sect authorized by the rules of such society to perform the marriage ceremony.

Do I need an appointment to be married by the judge?

  • Yes, you should contact the court by:
    • Call the Court at (406) 426-0241
    • Email the Court with your name and contact information and the Judge will contact you
    • Stop in at the City Court and talk with the Judge after you have picked up your marriage license.

How far in advance do I need to schedule an appointment to be married?

  • We need at least two days notice to schedule a wedding, however, the Judge may be able to schedule your wedding sooner.
  • Availability is based upon the Judges' court schedule.
  • You must have your license in hand for the Judge to perform your ceremony. 

Can I use my own wedding vows? 

  • Of course you can use your own wedding vows. 
  • The Court also has vows that can be used.
